Report: MD-80 suffers wing tip strike following unstabilized approach at Kandahar, Afghanistan

A Spanish MD-83 passenger plane suffered a wing tip strike upon landing at Kandahar, Afghanistan. The crew flew an RNAV approach for which the operator lacked authorization and continued to land even when the approach became unstabilized.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it is proposing a $300,000 civil penalty on American Airlines for a maintenance violation.
