Tire failures on two Air Canada Express Bombardier CRJ-700’s after landing with frozen brakes
30 December 2017

Two Bombardier CRJ-705’s operated by Jazz Air on behalf of Air Canada Express suffered tire failures on landing as a result of frozen brakes.

TSB Canada reported today on two incidents that occurred on December 19, 2017. The two CRJ-705 Regional Jet aircraft involved in the incident both departed Vancouver Airport, Canada: flight AC570 Regina Airport and AC616 to Winnipeg-James Armstrong Richardson Airport.

While landing on runway 31 at Regina, both tires on the left main landing gear of AC570 blew and the aircraft became disabled on the runway. Flight AC616 landed about the same time at Winnipeg and blew all main gear tires.
An inspection by the operator’s maintenance revealed that the landing gear brake assemblies on both aircraft were frozen.
