AIB Nigeria to investigate An-74 runway excursion accident at São Tomé and Principe
25 August 2017

Authorities in São Tomé and Principe have decided to delegate their formal investigation of the July 29 runway overrun accident at São Tomé Island Airport.

The Antonov 74TK-100 jet, operated by Cavok Air (Ukraine) ran off the end off the runway at São Tomé Island Airport after the flight crew aborted the takeoff following a bird strike. The crew of five survived the accident.

It was recently reported that both engines lost power as a result of bird ingestion.

The request for Nigeria to carry out the investigation was due to the fact that Nigeria is the only country with an autonomous and experienced aviation accident investigation agency in West Africa. All costs and expense associated with the the investigation will be borne by the government of São Tomé and Principe.
