Ireland to pass legislation on laser attacks on pilots

In Ireland legislation is due to be passed, containing a measure making it an offence to shine laser beams at aircraft.

The measure is part of the State Airports Bill and conviction under the new legislation may lead to a fine of up to €50,000 ($68,000) or a jail term.

According to figures released by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA), there were 158 laser attacks on pilots in Irish airspace in 2013.  A 2011 IAA Memorandum stated that here were a total of 238 laser attacks on aircraft in the Dublin, Cork and Shannon areas in 2010, compared to 55 reported attacks in 2009 and 201 attacks being recorded up to the end of July 2011.
